Once the mind has convinced itself of danger, it just keeps thinking about it, despite any attempt to control it. It’s like standing under a waterfall of worry, unable to stop it from flowing or move away from it.
Our brains are basically ancient computers, formed to help us succeed in staying alive and procreating. They don’t come equipped with the programming needed for life satisfaction. That is software you’ll have to install yourself, through our work together.
Back in the days when we were coming down out of the trees, all we really needed was food and sex, and our brains were exceptionally well designed to help us get those things.
The anxiety that we experience warned us of dangers, and helped to keep us safe so that we could be a successful species. And it worked!

Since it likely won’t find a lion waiting in the bush, it instead focuses on risk of emotional harm, or rejection by our social network, and basically equates that with certain death.
For example, the anxiety you might feel about going into a large group of people you’ve never met might be so overwhelming that you avoid social gatherings. Why be so afraid of a group of people? Because in that primitive part of your brain, you believe that if they reject you, you will die. So, of course you’d rather stay home!
The trick is to learn how to override that primitive part of the brain and drag it into modern day.

Anxiety help is simpler than you might think. I find it helpful to compare to a physical workout. If you want to increase your muscle tone in your biceps, you start doing bicep curls. They’re challenging at first, but over time, you find yourself able to life heavier weights and do more reps. You see results and are more likely to keep up the new workout.
Managing the anxiety circuit in your brain isn’t all that different. In our work together, you will learn psychological techniques to improve your ability to respond to stress. One of the most powerful ways to practice this is by slowing down the mind when it starts racing. In order to achieve that, I will introduce mindfulness and meditation into our work together. Similar to the bicep curls, it might feel awkward at first. But over time, it will become easier, and you will be amazed at the difference the exercise makes in your life.
The other thing to remember is that your biceps won’t gain strength because you read about how to do a bicep curl. They won’t change if you try a set of curls one day and then stop because you didn’t notice anything happen. In physical exercise, it is not uncommon to seek support from a personal trainer.
